For Portuguese expats, emigrants or second and third generation Luso descendants around the world, it can be difficult to educate children in their Portuguese history and heritage, especially if you don’t have access to a community, materials and schools in Portuguese. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of resources about the History of Portugal for children.
The list of resources below are simple and engaging ways to educate both first and heritage language Portuguese speakers. It ranges from videos to books, in Portuguese (European) and English (in the first section right below).

This is the first History of Portugal for very young readers published in English (affiliate link). Published in 2017, it’s been written for elementary and middle school students, and has been placed on the Plano Nacional de Leitura, a national education initiative sponsored by Portugal’s Ministry of Education.
This animated video is about the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. The video is the product of a partnership between the Museu de Alberto Sampaio (Alberto Sampaio’s Museum) and Câmara Municipal de Guimarães (Guimaraes Local Council), for the Commemoration of the 900 years of the birth of the first Portuguese monarch.
This is a nice and simple video about the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974, also known as the ’25 de Abril’.
