This is a list of Youtube channels in Portuguese (European) that focus on the spoken word. There’s a list of our favourite YouTube shows in Portuguese for under 5 year olds here, which includes song and animation, but sometimes, we just need a good old-fashioned story. A Maior Flor do Mundo – short film voiced by the author Jose Saramago

This stop-motion award-winning animation, narrated by the author himself, is a real treat. It’s a 10-minute short film based on the book of the same name, A Maior Flor do Mundo, by Portuguese Nobel Laureate Jose Saramago. It was Saramago’s only children’s picture book, published in 2001, and the animation is delightful, as is the story. I’m so happy to have found this animation. Quem Conta um Conto – Traditional Tales 

In October 2017 EPE (Ensino de português no Estrangeiro by Instituto Camões) launched a new YouTube channel with traditional tales. The first three videos are by two teachers of the EPE network in the UK and include children’s Tales.

It’s a little like CBeebies Bedtime Story but to me, it feels like speaking on Skype with family back home. I hope that the channel adds many more of these videos. Click here for the playlist

Poetry 

Personally, I’m a lover of poetry, especially Portuguese poetry. So when I came across this channel, from the Portuguese TV channel RTP, called ‘Um poema por semana’ (A poem per week), I was well and truly delighted and spent a good while reminiscing. I hope you and your children and enjoy it too!
